A wish list compiled by this foster child

The story of a young boy from Oklahoma recently touched the hearts of thousands after it was shared by the Facebook group Dream Catchers for Abused Children—an organization dedicated to supporting and protecting children who have endured trauma, neglect, and violence within their own families.

This boy’s early life was marked by unimaginable hardship. His biological parents, both struggling with alcoholism, subjected him to years of neglect and abuse. He was often left hungry, frightened, and alone—deprived not just of basic needs, but also of the love and safety every child deserves.

Thankfully, neighbors eventually alerted the authorities, leading to his rescue and removal from the toxic environment. He was placed in the care of a foster program run by Dream Catchers, which provides emergency support and long-term solutions for children affected by violence in the home.

The volunteers, deeply moved by the boy’s condition and spirit, worked tirelessly to find him a loving adoptive family. When the boy learned he was finally being adopted, he did something that brought tears to everyone who read it—he wrote a simple but powerful letter to his future family.

In it, he listed the things he hoped for—not toys or gadgets, but the very basics that many of us take for granted. His words reflect a childhood lost to pain, but also a deep well of hope for a better life.

Here is what he wrote:

“Things I want in my family:”

  • I want food and water.

  • Don’t hit me.

  • A house with running water and lights.

  • I want love.

  • Mom and dad who don’t fight.

  • I want no drugs.

  • Don’t kill my pets.

  • Help me with school.

  • Nice, clean clothes.

  • No lice. No bugs in the house.

  • A clean house.

  • A clean bed with covers.

  • Don’t sell my toys.

  • Treat me fair.

  • Don’t get drunk.

  • A TV in the house.

  • Let me keep my school stuff.

  • Nice shoes.

  • My own comb and soap.

  • A nice house that’s safe, with a heater and a warm coat.

  • A toothbrush.

The innocence and sincerity in this list is what made it go viral. It’s a gut-wrenching reminder of how many children live without the basic things they should never have to ask for: safety, love, shelter, and dignity.

This boy’s story isn’t just about heartbreak—it’s about resilience. It's about the incredible strength of a child who, despite being failed by the people who were supposed to protect him, still dared to dream of a better future.

His letter stands as a powerful call for awareness, compassion, and action. As we navigate our own struggles, may we remember there are children out there who aren’t asking for much—just a safe place to sleep, a hug at the end of the day, and someone who believes in them.

And thanks to his new adoptive family, this brave young boy is finally getting just that: a new beginning.
