A police dispatch officer picked up a call and immediately heard a child crying, explaining that his mother had gone to heaven. The officer’s compassionate response helped comfort the boy during such a difficult moment.
"Samuel, come here," called his father one day. Samuel responded cautiously, not out of fear of punishment, but because he sensed something was wrong.
Sam had always been sensitive to others' emotions, and the sadness in his father's voice was something he wasn’t ready to confront. His dad never called him by his full name unless it was serious, but Sam knew he hadn’t done anything wrong that day.

"Yes, Father," Sam replied when he finally joined his father on the living room couch.
"Listen, son," his father began, his voice heavy. "I have... something I need to tell you, and I need you to stay calm." Sam felt uneasy at the seriousness in his father's voice, but he nodded, trying to stay composed.
"Your mother... will not be coming back to our house," his father said, his words hanging in the air.
Sam was stunned. His mom had been rushed out of the house earlier that morning after she stopped breathing, but they'd been told she'd return soon.
"Never? Why?" Sam asked, his voice filled with confusion.
"Because she flew to heaven, son," his father replied softly.
To six-year-old Sam, it sounded as though his mom had simply gone on a trip to heaven. He nodded and asked, "When will she be back?"
At that, his father broke down in tears and quickly left the room.

Sam had waited for days, hoping his mom would come home, but when she never did, worry began to creep in. A whole week passed, and still, there was no sign of her. Sam became more and more distressed, unable to shake the fear that something was wrong.
He didn’t want to ask his dad, though. Every time Sam tried to bring it up, his father would freeze and end up crying, leaving Sam feeling even more confused and helpless. After a weekend of restless thinking, Sam decided it was time to take matters into his own hands.
He spent several days thinking it over, and eventually, it dawned on him that something bad might have happened to his mom. Maybe that’s why she hadn’t been able to come back home. With a new sense of determination, he decided to call the police.
When the phone picked up, a calm, no-nonsense voice greeted him.
“911, how may I help you?” the dispatcher asked.
“Hello, 911? This is Sam, and I’m calling to tell you about my mother,” Sam said, his voice tinged with worry.
“What’s wrong with her?” the dispatcher asked.
“Well, she hasn’t been home for a few days, and my dad and I are starting to get worried,” Sam explained. “He says she went to heaven, but I’m afraid she got lost on her way.”
At first, the dispatcher thought it might be a prank. But when he heard the deep note of despair in Sam’s voice, he paused, realizing this was something more serious.

“How old are you?” the dispatcher, John Lewis, asked gently.
“I’m six, sir. Can you help me find my mom? I’m really worried she won’t be able to find her way back,” Sam replied, his voice filled with concern.
John paused for a moment, weighing his words carefully. He knew that telling the boy the truth would shatter him, but he couldn’t just hang up without offering some kind of comfort or guidance.
“If you want her to find her way home, how about you try writing her a letter every month? You can send them to her using red balloons. When she sees them, she’ll know you’re thinking of her and will follow the trail of balloons back to you,” John suggested, trying to bring some sense of hope to the situation.
Excited by the idea, Sam thanked the dispatcher before hanging up. He felt like he finally had a plan to help bring his mom back. That afternoon, Sam wrote his first letter to his mother, explaining how the house felt empty without her. He thought maybe, just maybe, the mess in the house would make her miss home even more since she hated clutter.
Sam waited eagerly for a response, but none came. Undeterred, he wrote another letter the next month. This time, he described how sad his father looked without her, hoping it would make his mom want to come back. But again, there was no reply, though Sam watched as his red balloons floated high into the sky, hoping they'd reach her.

When Sam didn’t receive a response to his second letter, he decided to call the police again. This time, the dispatcher kindly reassured him, offering words of encouragement and once again advising him to keep writing the letters.
Moved by the boy’s persistence, the dispatcher reached out to his colleagues for support. He gathered information on Sam’s family, contacting the boy’s father and teachers to get a better sense of the situation.
A few days later, a police motorcade arrived on Sam’s street. Each officer in the convoy carried a single red balloon, presenting them to Sam with warm smiles and words of encouragement.
Feeling uplifted by the gesture, Sam wrote another letter to his mother. This time, he was overjoyed to receive a response. The letter, telling him how much his mother loved him, brought a sense of relief. In reality, it was Sam’s father who had been writing the letters. He had made the decision to continue this small act of kindness, hoping that one day, his son would be ready to understand the truth about his mother’s passing.
