The 16-Pound Baby Who Shocked the World in 1983—Wait Until You See Him Today
In 1983, 24-year-old Patricia Clarke had a strong feeling that her unborn baby would be larger than average. After all, she came from a family where big babies were common, and she had already given birth to one sizeable child. However, nothing could have prepared her for just how massive her second baby would be.
When Kevin Robert Clark was born, he weighed over 16 pounds, making him one of the largest newborns ever delivered at Community Memorial Hospital and possibly in all of New Jersey at the time. The medical staff was stunned. His birth made headlines, as a baby of such size was practically unheard of. Despite his enormous weight, Kevin was perfectly healthy—a huge relief to his parents.
However, his size did present some unique challenges right from the start. Kevin was too big for a standard hospital bassinet, and his parents quickly realized that regular baby clothes wouldn’t fit him. They had to scramble to find larger outfits and even adjust his crib to accommodate his rapidly growing frame.
From Newborn Sensation to National Fame
As expected, Kevin’s remarkable size caught the media’s attention. His story spread across the country, and soon, he was featured on "Good Morning America" and even made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live" as part of a comedy segment about unusually large babies. His fame continued as people remained fascinated by his exceptional growth.
But Kevin’s story didn’t stop there. As he grew older, he continued to defy expectations. By the time he was just 12 years old, he stood 5 feet 7 inches tall—already towering over many adults. When he entered junior high, his height had soared to an astounding 6 feet 5 inches, making him one of the tallest students in the entire school. And he wasn’t done growing yet.
In an interview with the New York Post, Kevin shared how his height often became the topic of conversation wherever he went.
“There isn’t a day that goes by when someone doesn’t ask me how tall I am,” he said. “I like to joke that I’m 5-foot-21. When people ask if I play basketball, I ask them if they play miniature golf.”
Where Is He Now?
Fast forward to today, and Kevin has fully embraced his incredible stature. Now 40 years old, he stands at a towering 6 feet 9 inches. Though he once found the constant attention a bit overwhelming, he has learned to take it in stride—literally, with his giant footsteps.
Kevin is now a retired soldier and lives with his wife, who is 6 feet tall, and their Great Dane, a fittingly large pet for a man of his size. While his remarkable birth story still fascinates many, for Kevin, being exceptionally tall has simply become a part of life.
From being a record-breaking newborn to becoming a towering figure in adulthood, Kevin’s journey is a testament to how life can surprise us in the most unexpected ways.
